Topology optimization algorithms are a rapidly advancing technique for optimizing mechanical parts for strength and weight. However, development has been focused on relatively small-scale components and research towards fabricating topology-optimized,  large-scale structures has been limited. The major barrier to this is, in general, size. Large-scale components take up enormous resources, namely time, material, and energy. In an effort to reduce the resources needed to manufacture optimized architectural-scale components, the team proposed a method for splitting topology-optimized shapes into space frame structures, decreasing the time and material cost of manufacturing, while retaining the qualities inherent to topology optimization, lig
