AADL
A public library is multiprogrammatic, flexible, and ultra-available, often giving more than it takes. Canonically defined by its ability to store broad categories of information, a library must also act socially, as a multivalent campus of refuge, assistance, entertainment, and opportunity for local and visiting publics.
Figured Field reconsiders the hierarchy of the public library, harnessing its exceptional diversity of embedded function to create a campus of interconnected, programmatically unique volumes. Through taking cues from bas-relief urbanism and midcentruy compositional artwork (Sophie Taueber-Arp), individual volumes are fastened with a thickened ground plane, allowing for variable, highly individual pockets of outdoor space to appear amongst a field of buildings.
