A public library is multiprogrammatic, flexible, and ultra-available, often giving more than it takes. While canonically defined by its capacity for storing information, a library must also act as a multivalent campus of refuge, assistance, entertainment, and opportunity.
Figured Field reconsiders the hierarchy of the public library, harnessing its exceptional diversity of embedded function to create a campus of interconnected, typologically unique volumes. Taking cues from bas-relief urbanism, these chunks of program were fastened with a raised ground plane, allowing for variable, highly individual pockets of outdoor space to appear amongst the network of buildings.
